Web Hosting for Students in India: Portfolio & Projects

By CheapHostIndia Team

A portfolio on your own domain says more in a placement interview than a free subdomain link. Here is what students can host, what Starter covers, and how to pay for it.

At some point in college, someone will ask you for a link: a placement recruiter, an internship form, a hackathon judge or your project guide. A link like yourname.in, with your projects, resume and contact details, makes a better first impression than a screenshot or a zip file. This guide covers hosting for students in India. It shows how to put a portfolio or college project online properly, without spending much or wading through jargon.

Why your own domain beats a free subdomain

Free platforms are fine for practice. For anything a recruiter will see, your own domain on real hosting is the better choice:

  • It looks serious. yourname.in on a resume looks professional. A long free subdomain with someone else's brand in it looks like a class assignment.
  • It stays yours. Free platforms can change their rules, add their own branding, or shut down a free tier. Your domain and your files stay under your control.
  • You get a real email address. you@yourname.in on job applications looks far better than a nickname-plus-numbers Gmail ID.
  • You learn real skills. Uploading files, connecting a domain, setting up a database and managing SSL in cPanel are the same jobs people do on real company servers, and they are worth mentioning in interviews.
  • One link for everything. Your portfolio, resume, project demos and blog can all sit under one address that goes on your resume and LinkedIn.

What students can host

Shared cPanel hosting handles most student work:

  • A personal portfolio: an about page, your projects, a downloadable resume and a contact form.
  • Static HTML, CSS and JavaScript sites: front-end projects, including framework builds that compile to plain files. Upload them with File Manager and they work.
  • WordPress sites: a portfolio, a blog about what you are learning, or a site for your college club or event. Our guide to installing WordPress manually in cPanel walks you through it.
  • PHP and MySQL projects: the classic college project stack, such as a library management system, a hostel booking app or a student result portal. Create the database in cPanel, import your tables through phpMyAdmin, upload your PHP files, and update the database details in your config file.
  • A demo for your final-year project: so examiners and recruiters can try it live instead of watching a video.

If your project uses a backend that needs its own long-running server, such as some Node.js, Python or Java applications, check with us on WhatsApp or contact before you buy, so you know whether shared hosting fits.

What the Starter plan gives you

For one portfolio or one project site, Starter is usually all you need. It costs ₹49/month and includes:

  • 1 website
  • 5 GB of storage
  • 1 mailbox, such as you@yourname.in
  • cPanel to manage files, databases, email and SSL
  • Free SSL: once your domain points to your hosting and the certificate is issued, your site opens on https:// without browser warnings
  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Automated weekly backups (JetBackup)

5 GB is plenty for a portfolio, a few project demos and a WordPress blog. The limit students usually hit is the 1-site rule: a portfolio, a club site and a friend's project are three sites, not one. If you get there, you can raise a support ticket to upgrade to Growth or Pro later.

Hosting does not include a domain unless it is on your order, and domain renewals are billed separately, so budget for both.

Connecting your domain

After payment, your account is created automatically and your cPanel login details are emailed to you. Next, point your domain to your hosting, so typing yourname.in opens your site. If you have not done this before, follow our guide on pointing your domain's DNS to your hosting. Once the domain points correctly, free SSL is set up automatically through cPanel.

Monthly, yearly or Lifetime Starter

There is no separate student price. You get the same Starter plan as everyone else, and you choose how to pay for it:

  • Monthly, ₹49/month: good if you only need the site for one semester, a project submission or a placement season. You can stop when you are done.
  • Yearly, ₹490/year: 10 times the monthly price for 12 months. Good if you know you will keep the site for at least a year.
  • Lifetime Starter, ₹1,999 one-time: the same features as Starter, Lifetime prepaid for the life of the plan on our platform. Good if you want your portfolio to stay up through college and your first job without having to remember yearly renewals. Fair-use limits apply, as on every shared plan, and the full terms are on our Lifetime prepaid page.

A simple way to decide: if you are not sure you will keep the site, start monthly. If your portfolio will be your long-term address online, compare yearly and Lifetime Starter.

A launch checklist for your portfolio

  • Buy a domain close to your name, and avoid hyphens and numbers if you can.
  • Point the domain to your hosting and wait until it loads.
  • Check that https:// works and the padlock shows.
  • Create your mailbox and use it on your resume.
  • Add your best two or three projects with a short write-up of what you built and what you learned.
  • Add a PDF resume and a working contact form.
  • Open the site on your phone, because recruiters often will.
  • Keep your own copy of your files and database, especially before submission deadlines.

Pick a plan, then pay

For a student portfolio or a single college project, Starter at ₹49/month is the place to start. Compare monthly, yearly and Lifetime Starter on our pricing page, choose the option that fits how long you need the site, and pay. Your account is created automatically and your login details arrive by email.
