cPanel vs custom hosting panels: what matters in India
cPanel vs host-built panels on shared hosting in India — when freelancers already know the panel, what Starter/Growth/Pro include, and when a familiar layout matters.
When you buy shared hosting in India, the plan cards talk about sites, disk, and price. The thing that decides whether you can actually run the site yourself — or hand it to a freelancer — is often the control panel.
Some hosts give you cPanel. Others give you a panel they built, or something like hPanel, where the menus only match that company's help docs. This post is about that choice, in plain terms.
What "custom panel" usually means
A custom panel is a control panel that exists mainly on one host. File manager, email, SSL, and domains are still there, but the labels and layout are unique to that company. Guides you find on the open web often won't match the screen in front of you.
That is fine if you never change helpers and you like that host's own tutorials. It gets expensive in time when:
- a freelancer has to learn a new layout for a one-off job
- you switch freelancers and the next person has never seen that panel
- a generic "how to point DNS in cPanel" article doesn't apply
What cPanel is for, in practice
cPanel is a control panel many freelancers and agencies who build sites in India already know. On a normal shared account you use it to:
- add a website on a domain
- create a mailbox such as hello@yourdomain
- manage DNS and subdomains
- issue free SSL once the name resolves
- install WordPress from the WordPress installer in cPanel
- browse files and databases when you need to move something by hand
You are not buying a different product on Starter vs Growth vs Pro. A larger plan adds sites, disk, and mailboxes. It does not unlock a different panel. Unmetered bandwidth is on every plan.
CheapHostIndia runs cPanel on every plan, including Starter, with free SSL. Prices are in rupees: ₹49 / ₹69 / ₹99 monthly, yearly 10×. We sell to customers in India and price in ₹. We don't claim Indian data centres. What we stand behind is the panel, free SSL, and the limits on the plan you pick.
When a familiar panel matters more than a "simpler" one
Hosts sometimes market a custom panel as simpler. For a first-time shop owner who will only ever click one "make a site" button, that can be true.
It matters less for:
- a freelancer with three client sites on one login
- a student who will later hand the account to a senior
- anyone who expects to follow a normal cPanel guide for SSL or DNS
If the person who will log in already knows cPanel, a host-only panel is a training cost you pay on day one and again every time the helper changes.
cPanel is not a builder, and it is not a VPS
cPanel is the admin for shared hosting. It is not a drag-and-drop website builder with no panel at all. If you want zero panel, this product is the wrong fit.
It is also not a VPS. You don't need a VPS for a normal brochure site, portfolio, or small shop. You need enough disk, HTTPS, and a panel you or your web person can learn once. More on that path: cPanel hosting and WordPress hosting.
How this ties to plan choice
Pick the plan for how many real sites and mailboxes you will run:
- Starter — 1 site, 5 GB, 1 mailbox — ₹49/mo or ₹490/year
- Growth — 5 sites, 20 GB, 5 mailboxes — ₹69/mo or ₹690/year
- Pro — unlimited sites, 50 GB, unlimited mailboxes — ₹99/mo or ₹990/year
Same cPanel on all three. Full comparison: pricing.

A short checklist before you buy
- Who will log into the panel after you pay — you, a freelancer, or both?
- Do they already know cPanel?
- How many domains and mailboxes do you need on day one?
- Is WordPress the next step after SSL? If yes, you want the installer in cPanel, not a panel hunt.
If the answer to (2) is yes, prefer a host that ships cPanel on the plan you can actually afford — including the cheapest one.
When you're ready
Open cPanel hosting, pick Starter, Growth, or Pro, and pay. Contact or WhatsApp if you want a pointer first — name the domain and how many sites you have.
